SHOES
The gait cycle is defined as the time interval between heel strike of
one foot until the heel strike of the opposite foot. The major events
used to divide the gait cycle into two periods for the purpose of description
are, the stance phase and swing phase. Stance phase (when the foot is
on the ground) constitutes 63% of the gait cycle while swing phase comprises
28% of the cycle. Most complications arise during stance phase while the
foot is on the ground. This represents the majority of the gait cycle.
When the foot comes in contact with the ground the ground reaction forces
change the alignment, stresses and mechanics of all the joints in the
lower body. .Deformities and weaknesses in the foot and ankle can create
severe consequences throughout the entire body.
Most commonly we see complications such as plantar fasciitis, Morton’s
neuroma, hallex valgus (bunions), knee pain, hip pain, and even low back
pain. Appropriate foot wear can assist in controlling or correcting the
alignment of the foot and the ankle during weight bearing to help correct
or reduce the symptoms of many of these pathologies.
At Williams Physical Therapy, we carry several lines of athletic, running,
walking, casual and work shoes and boots. Shoes have different shaped
lasts (shape of the foot bed) and support systems. Each shoe company has
their own specific patented support system. Very basically, shoe companies
design their shoes with 3 levels of support. They include cushion, stability
and motion control. Again, in general, people who have a flexible foot
type would be better satisfied with shoes with specific motion control
technology. As you progress toward the rigid foot type, individuals appreciate
less stability properties and require more cushioning features.
Unfortunately, most retail shoe sales individuals do not have the specific
background in education necessary to place individuals in a shoe that
matches their foot characteristics. Most individuals either market and/or
purchase shoes based on current fashion trends and/or price. This is not
always in the best interest of the individual, especially one who is already
having foot complications.
At Williams Physical Therapy, we work hard to assess all types of foot
or biomechanical problems that could be addressed with appropriate footwear.
We never try to fit the foot to the shoe, but rather the shoe to the foot.
